GYCF OVERVIEW
The Global Youth Culture Forum is a perfect example of the conversation between a global organization, the UCLG-United Cities Local Governments, and local administrations: the Municipality of Jeju and the government of the Self Governing Province of Jeju. After the success of the Second UCLG Culture Summit held in Jeju in 2017, three key elements were identified to drive the debate on development and future in Jeju Island: Culture, Public Space and Youth, while local institutions  selected two places like specific contexts of which to work during the GYCF: the Jeju neighborhoods of Namsung and the Old Downtown.

The mission of the GYCF is to broaden the discussion and root it in the field. Accordingly, the general curator, Rosa Pera, is invited by UCLG to develop a curatorial proposal and propose two international artists who will join two local artists proposed by the local institutions involved. The four mentors will work through two groups composed fifty-fifty by young international and local architects and artists each. The first group is led by Alfonso Borragán (Spanish based in the U.K.) and Kim Kidai (South Korean based in Jeju), and the second one is led by Giuliana Racco (Canadian based in Barcelona) and South Korean artist based in Jeju Yangkura. The first group will work on Namsung and the second group on The Old Downtown. Of the more than 120 candidates who applied to the International Call, there is a selection of 20 international mentees from 14 countries (Brasil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the U.K  and Uruguay), who will join the 20 South Korean artists proposed by the local institutions.

Taking the curatorial proposal by general curator Rosa Pera as starting point, two different programs have been designed by mentors leading Namsung and the Old Downtown.

In parallel, a third group is led by local curator and mentor Lee Nayun, proposed by the local institutions, with 9 artists from Jeju.
